“Unfortunately, you can go to many restaurants throughout the metro area and find waitstaff who are not making the minimum wage,” says Daniel Katz, who’s with the Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs. He says these staffers are often immigrants and adults supporting families, and they fear retaliation if they ask their employers to pay them what they’re owed.
