In Memoriam: Sidney Dickstein 1925–2014

The Washington Lawyers’ Committee sadly shares the news of the passing of Sidney Dickstein, friend of the Committee and co-founder of Dickstein Shapiro LLP.

Among many other accomplishments during his distinguished career, Sidney Dickstein received the Committee’s Vincent E. Reed Award in 2013 for his exceptional commitment to the Duke Ellington School of the Arts and our DC Public School Partnership Program. Under Sidney Dickstein’s leadership, for nearly 20 years his firm has invested in, supported, and engaged with students at Duke Ellington. Sidney Dickstein and his wife personally provided key funding for Duke Ellington’s media center and video production program, and for 12 years arranged for students to attend an arts summer camp in Colorado. The partnership Sidney Dickstein began at Duke Ellington has been a model for 45 similar partnerships the Committee has helped to create at DC public schools across the city. Thus, Sidney Dickstein was not just a major force in fostering the talents of hundreds of aspiring artists, but also in enriching the educational experiences of thousands of children throughout the city.
