DC Schools are for Everyone: Public School Guidance for Immigrant Communities

As all of DC’s public schools are starting up again, it is critical that our immigrant families know that all children living in the District have a right to attend public schools, and that families have accurate answers to their common questions regarding their rights as they pertain to public schools. The Washington Lawyer’s Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs is circulating flyers around the DC area so that we can be sure it will reach immigrant families in your school communities.

It condenses into one page the key points of guidance prepared for DC public school personnel last year by the DC Office of the Attorney General, with the help of Mayer, Brown & Platt and the Committee.

Note that each of the attached one-page flyers has two sides, as this has been prepared in four languages: English\Spanish is available here, and Amharic\Mandarin is available here. Please forward, post and distribute these as widely as possible. Committee representatives will also be distributing hard copies of these as they attend meetings at schools each week.

Also note that, if families have trouble enrolling in school, are threatened in any way if they attempt to do so, or believe that school officials are cooperating with ICE, they can contact the Committee for help.
