AU Student Resolves Lawsuit Against American University & Metropolitan Police Department

WASHINGTON, DC – Ms. Wheeler, a student at American University, has resolved her claims against American University and the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department in Wheeler v. American University, et al., 1:20-cv-02735 (DDC 2021).

Ms. Wheeler and American University announce that they have mutually resolved her lawsuit against the University.  American University is committed to the safety, security, and well-being of all students and the entire university community. To that end, the University will retain a third party consultant to assist with its regular periodic review of its policies and procedures regarding its responses to reports of situations involving students having social, emotional, behavior, or medical difficulties which may involve wellness checks and involuntary hospitalizations.

Ms. Wheeler also reached a settlement with Metropolitan Police Department officers arising from the same incident.

Ms. Wheeler is represented by the Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights & Urban Affairs and Jones Day.
