Washington Lawyers’ Committee names Emily B. Read as New Director of its Equal Employment Opportunity Project

Washington, D.C. – The Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs announced today that Emily B. Read, Staff Attorney for the Committee’s Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO Project) has been named the Committee’s EEO Project Director. She succeeds Susan Huhta in the post. Ms. Read’s responsibilities will include overseeing the EEO Project’s staff and caseload.

“Emily has done an exceptional job over the past two years at the Committee, and is an ideal successor to the excellent lawyers who have guided the EEO Project over the past 25 years,” said Executive Director Rod Boggs.

Ms. Read, a graduate of Cornell University, received her J.D. from Northeastern University School of Law and her L.L.M. in Advocacy from Georgetown University Law Center. Prior to joining the Committee, she worked for the public interest law firm Bernabei & Wachtel, PLLC, representing clients in civil rights matters. She also worked as a Staff Attorney and Teaching Fellow at Georgetown Law Center’s Family Advocacy Clinic and Institute for Public Representation.

The Washington Lawyers’ Committee was established in 1968 by members of the city’s leading law firms in response to racial disturbances that swept Washington and other cities. The Committee provides pro bono legal services to address discrimination and entrenched poverty in the Washington community with the resources of volunteer lawyers and law firms, providing annually more than 50,000 hours of legal representation to the Committee’s clients. Since its founding, the Committee has handled more than 5,000 cases on behalf of individuals and groups in the areas of equal employment opportunity, fair housing, public accommodations, public education, immigrant and refugee rights, and disability rights. Addressing employment discrimination has always been a primary focus of the Committee’s work.
