Fighting for Prisoners and Patients During COVID-19

The federal prison in Butner, North Carolina has become a COVID-19 hotspot killing 10 prisoners and sickening scores more. Together with the ACLU, ACLU NC, and Winston & Strawn we sued to protect the prisoners at Butner Federal Prison and gain immediate release for those who are most vulnerable. Those who are incarcerated have reported not being provided masks or gloves and many of the men are housed in overcrowded dormitories of between 70 to 160 people.

In response to the devastating COVID-19 outbreak at St. Elizabeths Hospital, the United States District Court issued a preliminary injunction to protect the patients, staff, and community. “Saint Elizabeths Hospital has become a COVID-19 “hot spot” with 14 deaths and more than 100 infections because the District failed to implement necessary infection control measures… This order is essential to slow the spread of the virus and limit further tragedy” – Kaitlin Banner, Deputy Legal Director
