Susan E. Huhta

Susan E. Huhta became the Director of the Equal Employment Opportunity Project at the Washington Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs in September 2001 after working as its EEO Staff Attorney since 1999. During her tenure at the Committee, she has litigated many individual and class action cases challenging employment and public accommodations discrimination. She also has represented numerous individuals in federal and local fair labor standards act cases, and individuals with family and medical leave act claims as well. She has made numerous presentations on topics related to employment discrimination law and public accommodations law, is a contributing editor to Lindemann & Grossman's Employment Discrimination Law treatise, and recently co-authored a law review article on the federal Pregnancy Discrimination Act. Before joining the Committee, Ms. Huhta was an associate in the Washington, D.C., office of the law firm of Arnold & Porter, where she represented both employers and employees in EEO litigation, and provided EEO counseling and training to employers. Ms. Huhta served as a clerk to the Honorable Barbara B. Crabb, then Chief Judge for the Western District of Wisconsin. She received her B.A. degree from Cornell University, and her J.D. degree, cum laude, from the University of Wisconsin Law School, where she served on the editorial board of the Wisconsin Law Review. She is a member of the District of Columbia bar, the National Employment Lawyers Association, the Metropolitan Washington Employment Lawyers Association, and she is a board member and former President of the Washington Council of Lawyers.

Warren K. Kaplan

Warren Kaplan joined the Committee in 1993, after thirty years of commercial litigation experience in private practice. From 1973 to 1993, he headed the litigation department of the D.C. firm of Melrod, Redman & Gartlan. During the past three decades he has been lead counsel in many trials in the local and federal courts of the metropolitan Washington area. At the Committee, Mr. Kaplan has worked primarily on several class actions, including the Committee's landmark sexual harassment class action against the District's Department of Corrections.

Emily Read joined the Committee as its EEO Staff Attorney in April 2009. Prior to joining the committee, Ms. Read was an Associate at Bernabei & Watchtel, PLLC, where she represented employees in EEO litigation in state and federal courts. Prior to her work at the firm, Ms. Read served as a Teaching Fellow at the Institute for Public Representation, a civil rights litigation clinical program at Georgetown University Law Center. As part of her fellowship, Ms. Read spent a semester as a visiting Staff Attorney at the University of the District of Columbia in the David A. Clarke School of Law Juvenile and Special Education Law Clinic. Prior to her fellowship at Georgetown, Ms. Read worked at the Mental Health Advocacy Project in San Jose, California, where she represented clients in disability discrimination, health care, public benefits, and housing matters. Ms. Read received her B.A. from Cornell University in 2001, her J.D. from Northeastern University School of Law in 2004, and her L.L.M. with honors from Georgetown University Law Center in 2007. Ms. Read is a member of the District of Columbia bar, the Metropolitan Washington Employment Lawyers Association, and the board of directors of the D.C. Law Students in Court clinical program, and is a volunteer attorney for the Washington Legal Clinic for the Homeless.
