Katherine L. Garrett

Garrett joined the Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights & Urban Affairs as Chief Operating Officer on January 1, 2018.  She comes to the Committee following a long career devoted to access to justice in the District of Columbia.  Most recently, Ms. Garrett served as the Executive Director of the DC Judicial Nomination Commission, the agency charged with the District’s merit-based process for recommending judges for the DC Court of Appeals and the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. 

Prior to her tenure at the JNC, Ms. Garrett served as the Executive Director of the DC Bar Foundation, as Chief of Staff in the US Department of Justice Office of Policy Development, in positions in the US DOJ’s Office of Justice Programs including the Violence Against Women Grants Office, and as the Executive Director of the DC Circuit Task Force on Gender, Race, and Ethnic Bias.  Following a clerkship for the Honorable Thomas F. Hogan, US District Court for the District of Columbia, Ms. Garrett started her practice as a trial lawyer with the plaintiff’s side employment and civil rights firm of Kator Scott & Heller.
