Re-Entry Issues

From Prison to the Community

One of the many concerns inmates have regards their transition back to society. This process is often called ‘reintegration’ or ‘re-entry’ for short and it can be fraught with difficulties without the necessary planning. Former inmates are under immense pressure to find jobs, housing, child care, obtain proper identification, obtain health care, or enroll in school (among a long list of other concerns). In addition, former inmates must become re-accustomed to functioning in a free society that is not guided by the strict rules of prison culture. All too often, inmates are not given proper counseling before coming back to the ‘streets’ and are thus forced to find their own sometimes familiar means of livelihood.
