The Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs seeks $1,000 sponsorships from select law firms for the Committee’s 2016 John Burke Pro Bono Breakfast.

About the Breakfast:

This year, we will highlight three cases by Committee staff, pro bono counsel, and clients: a discriminatory redevelopment lawsuit filed on behalf of tenants at Brookland Manor; a recent $550,000 jury verdict in the Chipotle pregnancy discrimination lawsuit; and an ongoing police misconduct case. DC Bar President Annamaria Steward, Associate Dean of Students, University of the District of Columbia, David A. Clarke School of Law, will also provide remarks.

The annual Burke Breakfast serves as the Committee's primary opportunity to introduce new lawyers and firms to our pro bono work, report to supporting firms on our recent cases and related activities, and discuss opportunities for lawyers’ and firms’ pro bono involvement.

For over 20 years, John L. Burke, Jr. served with distinction as the Committee’s General Counsel and as a volunteer attorney on a series of significant Committee cases. Shortly after his untimely death in 2004, the Committee’s Pro Bono Breakfast was renamed in his honor and a fund bearing his name was established. To date, the John Burke Memorial Fund has received over $100,000 in gifts. The proceeds of this fund are used to support the cause of pro bono service to which John contributed so greatly.
